Neuro Linguistic Programming

DR J. VIGNESH SHANKAR

Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) is aimed at enhancing the healing process by changing the conscious and subconscious beliefs ofpatients about themselves, their illnesses, and the world. These limiting beliefs are “reprogrammed” using a variety of techniques drawnfrom other disciplines including Hypnosis .

Neurolinguistic programming has been used to change the limiting beliefs of patients about their prospects of recovery from a widevariety of medical conditions including Parkinson’s disease, AIDS, migraines, arthritis, and cancer. Practitioners claim to be able to curemost phobias in less than one hour, and to help in making lifestyle changes regarding exercise, diet, smoking, etc. NLP has also beenused to treat allergies. In other fields, claimed benefits include improved relationships, communication, motivation, and businessperformance.

NLP consists of a set of powerful techniques for rapid and effective behavioural modification, and an operational philosophy to guide their use. It is based on four operational principles, which below these headings are explained in more detail.

Know what outcome you want to achieve. Have sufficient sensory acuity (acuity means clear understanding) to know if you are moving towards or away from your outcome. Have sufficient flexibility of behaviour so that you can vary your behaviour until you get your outcome. Take action now.
